The Ironman Journey

A Musician’s Path to Becoming an Ironman Athlete

Most people know me as a musician.

For over forty years, I have made a living performing on stages, producing music and entertaining audiences throughout Australia. What many people don't know is that I have also become deeply passionate about endurance sport.

At 49 years of age, my children decided I had spent long enough sitting behind mixing consoles and guitars. What began as a challenge quickly became a lifestyle.

Since then, I have completed multiple Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events, along with numerous marathons, half marathons and adventure races. Through thousands of kilometres of training and competition, I’ve discovered that the lessons learned in endurance sport are remarkably similar to those learned in music.

Success rarely comes from talent alone. It comes from consistency. Showing up when nobody is watching. Trusting the process. Continuing to move forward when progress feels slow.

Those same principles have helped me build a successful music career and continue to drive me towards my next goal:

To compete at the 2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

This page documents the journey, the training, the races, the setbacks, the victories and everything in between.

Welcome to the adventure.

Highlights so far...

Adventure Race Australia 2012

This was the first race, after months of training with my son Clae, which to be honest was the main reason for me. No doubt we were fit, but our orienteering was at best rudimentary. What a blast. And the seed to an athletic life was planted!

Ironman 70.3 Cairns 2014

This was my first Ironman event, made even more special, as I did it with Clae. The race day conditions were horrendous, and to this day at the time of writing, still by far the worst I've seen!

Ironman Busselton 2015

Our first full distance Ironman. This would be Clae's last Ironman, so crossing the line together, is one of the great moments of my life. Out of this world!

Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2018. Port Elizabeth. South Africa

My first time qualifying for a World Championship. Such a thrill, and an eye opener on so many levels. Good to be playing amongst the big boys!
